The Good Company

Books certainly bring a company to our lives like no person can. "...books are always good company...", a quote from one of my personal favorites: Louisa May Alcott. She not only could write books, but her taste for literary greatness was something to be admired. She has inspired me to allow books to be a type of company that provide a sweet escape, especially during the years of motherhood. While books provide a private and personal type of company, they also serve an unending list of purposes. The joy of reading, for me, is paired with conversation and discussion...with human company. Over the last several months, two kindred spirits and I began reading books together and having open ended discussion along the way. Logistically speaking, we couldn't possibly have a typical "book club night". Instead, we use technology to host our very own (very modern!) book club. Using the app, Marco Polo (a video chat platform), we converse and leave feedback when we're able. We never meet at a certain time or keep any structured rules. Just like reading books, it's very freeing! As we've moved along through a list of books, we get a little more into it each go around. This time, we're going all out... we're logging personal ratings, reviews, and turning it into a blog.

I'm eager to share the company we've kept (aka: the books), but the company I want to share about in this post is the human kind! Here's how it started...the very quick version: September of 2023, Karyn and I (Krista), were away for a weekend in a nearby town to where (at the time) our friend Heather lived. While I have been friends with Karyn since high school, and have known Heather for over 10 years, the two of them had never met in person... only on Marco Polo! That weekend we decided to meet for dinner and hit a few thrift stores. While in the book aisle, we began discussing some of the books that we had read and threw recommendations at each other. As we walked out the door, Karyn handed Heather our first book we would read together (Educated, by Tara Westover). Since then, history! Good books, good friends, good company.
